CanWork

CanAssist is excited to be providing meaningful employment and training opportunities to those with special needs, both within CanAssist and across the University of Victoria, as part of our CanWork program.

Over the years, CanAssist has employed numerous people with disabilities. Many have gone on to become long-term, highly valued employees in our organization. In many instances, a person who started as a volunteer at CanAssist - for example, working in our administrative office or testing technologies - eventually has become a part-time employee.

In addition, we are working to promote employment opportunities for those with special needs across the university campus. To that end, we support UVic employees with special needs by providing customized assistive devices and technologies to enable them to perform new work-related tasks. In other instances, we provide assistance to those with degenerative conditions so they can perform their existing duties longer.

The CanWork program will continue to look for opportunities both to train and employ people with special needs and to give other employers valuable guidance in making their workplaces more accessible and accommodating to those with disabilities.

We believe passionately that people with disabilities must be given every opportunity to participate fully in society - and that this full participation includes the ability to work.
